About the Author: Catherine Madigan

Catherine Madigan • She/her • Author of “Sionnachuighim” and “Metis’s Warning at Kuang Si”

Catherine Madigan is an aspiring writer from Dublin. While primarily interested in fiction, she fell in love with poetry while studying Creative Writing at UCC. Her first published work was a twelve-part fictional series in the Echo newspaper. She is a graduate of UCD Engineering and has recently relocated to Australia where she works as a Biomedical Engineer.

“Metis’s Warning at Kuang Si” describes a road accident in a country with limited healthcare and a high amputation rate. Metis is the goddess of wisdom and the mother of Athena, who is born from Zeus’s skull after it is split open with an axe. Blood and injury are central to the poem.

“Sionnachuighim” is an anthropomorphic poem that likens the pain of heartbreak to a weeping gash from a fox’s claw.
