A lot of my inspiration comes from my experiences as an immigrant and a non-native English speaker, and how that has influenced the ways in which I perceive and use the language. This piece is based heavily on my childhood in Poland, which I view as the origin of my passion for storytelling. “Roots” is all about the less-intense types of blood – the blood on a knee scrape, the blood in a playground fight, and the blood spilled on the ground we consider our home, no matter where we wind up.
